Re: price just spiked by Shotry

Closed at a loss of about 12p. 5 of that was spread. Should know better than to play with things like this.

I'm still in this, probably should have dropped half at a profit when I had the chance, but didn't.

Price action trying again to the upside. Seems to be setting up a little area of resistance at 169.5.

Re: NAV per Jefferies is 195p by gamesinvestor

"After such a fall, I would expect some recovery in the price from 168p but WDIK."

Actually old_P, you might want to ask what the F does Jefferies know.

There is virtually no way on God's Green Earth you can put a net asset value on this fund which has a complex set of high risk, cash consumptive companies hoping one day to make it big.

There is no guarantee any of the companies within this fund can offer returns enough to even cover the funds invested, let alone provide a future profit.

One for Arthur was at 16:1 in the National --- amongst 40 odd horses, you can calculate the real odds.

Re: Why is this UK listed? by gamesinvestor

  Wed, 19 Apr 2017 04:29:00 GMT

"Apart from a Loose Regulatory Environment I can see no reason whatsoever why this business is listed in London on AIM?"

Possibly because they had difficulty raising the money with low cost in the US?

It looks like, if my presumption is true, it is the right choice to have higher costs in the US, given the risks and high level of failure so far within the fund.

This is pure venture capital mind, and having had some experience, you can expect most of the investments within this VC to fail.
You are relying on one or two to scale big to compensate for the 90% that fail.

This company really has no place in Woodford's Equity Income Fund. In any other field of commerce like retail, consumer etc this would be classed as misrepresentation under some sale of goods act or something.

This is extremely high risk investment.

Why is this UK listed? by Yee Wo

Apart from a Loose Regulatory Environment I can see no reason whatsoever why this business is listed in London on AIM?

Tonnes of VC sources exist in the US for this sort of stuff. ALM is based in Boston and, IMHO, has found a rich seem of Other Peoples Money it can speculate with. Surprised Woodford is involved. The 1330 at Kempton probably has more rational and transparent odds!

Tell me why I'm wrong, please!!

NAV per Jefferies is 195p by old_punter

  Fri, 07 Apr 2017 16:01:00 GMT

FWIW the Jefferies estimate might mean the fall has gone far enough. Investec, the other large holder, sold some stock on 5th April so at 250p plus I guess to come down to 24/5%and GIC added to take them up to 8 or 9% per RNS.

After such a fall, I would expect some recovery in the price from 168p but WDIK.

price just spiked by Shotry

  Thu, 06 Apr 2017 10:23:00 GMT

Price rise above 172 looks bullish. I've entered long with a stop below 166. Short term at least there may be some buying. Short covering or bargain hunters, doesn't really matter if the price goes up

7 to be chopped by gamesinvestor

  Thu, 06 Apr 2017 07:30:00 GMT

""The seven companies being discontinued are Biotectix, Cephalogics, CryoXtract, Novare Pharmaceuticals, Optio Labs, RF Biocidics and Tinnitus Treatment Solutions.""

The last one has a real ring to it -- all seem to be biotech.
Maybe this is the right thing to do, but a CEO change and a capital raise prior to such an announcement is a little bit naughty to say the least.

These 23 -- look like reducing to 17 -- LINK

Most of these are biotechs. Given that their target products were known at the initial investment stage, why have they only now come to the conclusion that they would not be profitable therefore could not now deserve extra funding -- perhaps that statement by the company means they are also going to be difficult or impossible to sell (one of the options).

If I had wanted to try to sell one or more of these I would not put a statement like that into the press.

Short term noise by gamesinvestor

  Thu, 06 Apr 2017 06:48:00 GMT

LINK

Short term noise at Nothwest Biotherapeutics has lost $180M
Short term noise lost multiple millions at Rolls Royce
Short term noise lost multiple millions at Capita
Short term noise lost multiple millions at Centrica and ....

Personally I like the idea of avoiding short term noise, it's much better for your long term wealth!!

Perhaps there are a few areas that you can adopt to avoid short term noise :-
like high debt, unquoted companies, risky biotech start ups, start ups that should be applied only to Patient Capital Trust fund and not an Equity Income Fund, companies with low profit margins, companies with no profit margins, companies with a negative ROCE -- perhaps other simple criteria?

But then again, I'm not an expert fund manager so my silly comments don't really deserve much air time I suppose!!

Games -- Statistically most venture cap investments fail - statistically most biotech companies lose money -- lottery tickets often don't pay out either. Well there's always the long term I suppose.

What price? by old_punter

  Wed, 05 Apr 2017 17:42:00 GMT

I suspect its even lower than today's close at 185p but WDIK, relieved I didn't buy for a bounce at 250p yesterday.

Credit Suisse, as reported by Markets Live on FT Alphaville (a sometimes useful and free daily blog between 11-12am if you don't know it), who placed new equity in December 2016 at 367p (Woody scooped up 4m shares I think) say on a blue sky scenario the stock could be 4 times EV at 550p or on a grey sky scenario at 0.5 times EV 80p, toss a coin? I might buy a few c100p if they see it.

Woody's lost it! by LK Hyman

Woodentop has just issued a new blog post entitled "A great time to be investing in equities".

Well, up to a point, Lord Copper! It depends on which equities one chooses to invest in.

Eamann555,

"Chris Silva picked a good time to bail"

Pity he wasn't good at picking biotech stocks, eh?

Y'know, shipm8es, what put me off Allied Minds was its damnfool logo. My labrador could draw a better logo. It looks like an angry three year old child's first effort with a crayon. If the new CEO raver Jill wants to do summat useful at the start of her interim tenure she could do worse than ball that logo up, hurl it into the nearest waste paper bin, and start again.

And they say funds and markets are regulated???

How can you label something an equity income fund and load it with venture capital funds, because that is what Allied Minds is, and non profitable, non income bearing biotech stocks, some that are unquoted on any exchange?

Games - regulation my arxe -- the best way to regulate is to buy some stocks yourself.
